Ippolito Fleitz designs sculptural lobby

ppolito Fleitz Group was invited to design the lobby of ‘Lahmeyer-Haus’, a ten-storey office building that opened in 1990 in Frankfurt. The sculptural two-storey lobby acts as a ‘shared business card’ for the entire building, standing out from the rest of the building’s architecture.

The height of the lobby was exaggerated through vertical lamellae that dominate the walls. The irregular placement creates a dynamic composition that gives its unique sculptural quality. Beyond aesthetics, concealed interstitial absorption fields ensure unexpectedly warm acoustics.

The ceiling transforms the space by creating surprising new effects depending where it’s viewed from. The entire ceiling features suspended polished stainless steel polygonal elements. Spots set in the gap between the glossy ceiling and the lamellae illuminate the wall elements from above. The hidden lighting enhances the effect by making the walls glow.

The custom furniture within the lobby follows the sculptural aesthetic, creating a cohesive space. The black and white reception desk made of solid surface picks up on the shape of the ceiling elements. An upholstered seating element, as well as a letterbox located in front of the building take the sculptural theme further.

The lobby provides an unrestricted view of the elevators. The access and supply core located around the elevator shaft is identical on all floors. Viewed from the outside, this area is completely panelled with walnut veneer lamellae, thus offering a warmer variation on the sophisticated theme from the lobby. Here wooden pilaster strips run down the walls like veins, making the walls appear as cross-sections cutting through the room.
